Taking Your Cloud Chasing to a Whole New Level

Experienced vapers often excite at the idea of blowing bigger clouds, so much so that cloud chasing has become a sport. With safety in mind, we’ve some handy tips to make you the next biggest cloud chaser.


The inhale/exhale required for cloud chasing is different. You must perfect a large enough inhale to produce a big cloud, and the speed of the exhale must be slow. If your exhale is too fast, you’ll get a thin cloud. Just remember the slower, the thicker. One technique for creating a large cloud on the exhale involves moving backward at the same time, this is known as rip tripping.


An RDA or rebuildable drip atomizer allows you to control the drip of the e-liquid onto the coils. This isn’t helpful for everyday use, but if you’re trying to get a larger cloud, this allows you to drip before every few puffs. You must also be familiar with sub ohming. Your atomizer must, therefore be firing at under 1 ohm of resistance.


Depending on the airflow, it can either affect your MOD or your cloud. If there is too much air escaping, then your clouds will be thin. However, if not enough air is escaping, it might damage your MOD. You definitely want thick clouds, but you don’t want your MOD to get damaged. Testing limited airflow is something to experiment with as a cloud chaser, but also to beware of.


Another potential danger to your MOD is overheating the battery. If you use your battery incorrectly or leave it charging too long, the battery can overheat and your MOD can catch on fire or explode. Make sure you are using the right brand of charger, or the one that came with your MOD and make sure to attend to the battery while it is charging. This way it will never get overcharged.

VG Chasing

Another thing to think about is the e-liquid. It should have a higher blend of VG. For thick clouds, your e-liquid should be about a 70/30 blend with VG being the greater unit and PG or being the lesser. This produces great clouds, is easy on the throat, and tastes better. You can also use pure VG, which is what professional cloud chasers tend to use.

The Wick and Coil

Wicking is another important part of cloud chasing. If you treat your wick properly you will get the most use out of your e-liquid. To do this, cut both ends of the wick. Fluff the ends up, and then tuck them under the coil, leaving room for air beneath the wick as you push it to one side. The most important part of cloud chasing is how your coils are built. Use a dual coil for maximum cloud production.

As you can see, cloud chasing is definitely only for the most experienced vaper. Misuse of the battery or airflow could lead to the explosion of your MOD potentially causing harm to you or those around you. Taking all this into consideration, enjoy! MOD Power or Airflow – Which Do You Prefer?

Typically, people that start using MODs do so because, having had the basic e-cigarette and/or vape pen experience, they’re ready to get to that next level. They want increased wattage and voltage, bigger hits, and larger vapor clouds. Essentially, a MOD is a bigger and more powerful device that’s often customized according to personal preference. Additionally to being extra powerful, MODs tend to allow for a bigger air intake in order to create more vapor without overheating. However, having more power and airflow can make it harder to find a perfect balance between the two. When an argument over MOD using begins, the central questions tends to be the same: Power or Airflow?

First of all it’s important to keep in mind that more power means more heat, while more airflow means more vapor. There needs to be an equilibrium between the two in order to get the amount of warmth, flavor and thickness that you prefer. The relation between temperature and the amount of air getting to the coils will determine not only these factors, but also the size and density of the resulting cloud. Some vape enthusiasts may find that warm and concentrated vapor hits the spot, while others may prefer cooler hits that produce bigger clouds. There’s no right or wrong, it’s simply a matter of personal choice.

Admittedly, though, that sweet spot is not always easy to find. Every MOD is different, provided with its own particular capabilities and unique build-up. Size is a preponderant factor, but it’s not the only one. The special characteristics and capacities of each MOD translate to a wide range of variables. The size of the battery is important, but the amount of power that is produced by it becomes meaningless without a suiting airflow allowance. The same works the other way around: It doesn’t matter how much air goes in the MOD if there isn’t enough power to heat it up.

Learning how to control these characteristics becomes a new task with each different, uniquely built vape MOD. A good example of a variable that’ll affect the settings is whether the MOD is adjusted by voltage (amount of electricity) or wattage (amount of work performed by electricity). Another important factor that comes into play when vaping is the e-liquid: Each product has a different composition which affects the process in its own manner.


Technical aspects aside, however, what ultimately defines the perfect balance between power and airflow are the personal preferences of the user. Take their drag technique for example: Whether someone likes mouth-to-lung hits or straight-lung hits will definitely have a huge impact on their preferred settings. More power is usually regarded as better for mouth-to-lung hits that are warmer and extra flavorful. In turn, more airflow tends to appeal more to those interested in cool lung hits packed with lots of vapor. For some people making huge clouds is a huge part of the appeal of vaping, and that comes with its own set of techniques and level-adjustments. There are even some that keep the vapor in their mouths without inhaling because they’re mainly interested in flavor and dislike any kind of harshness or strain.


As with many things in life, finding the perfect settings for your MOD is a matter of experimentation and adjustment. Power and airflow are both vital for correct functionality, but whether you favor one or the other depends on what you are trying to get. The Functionalities of a MOD’s Chip

Whether you choose a mechanical MOD (mech MOD) or regulated MOD for your vaping system determines the device’s range of functionality. The advantages of a regulated MOD are enhanced functionality and battery power provided by its smart chip.

MODs: Unregulated
A mechanical mod refers to a metal, tube-shaped device with no advanced electronics or wiring. It contains a battery and connector for a topper, also called an atomizer, that vaporizes the e-juice. The atomizer contains a wick, heating coil and mesh bridge, and heats the e-juice until it’s vaporized. A mech mod lacks complex circuitry and doesn’t provide advanced features that regulated mods do, such as settings to prevent battery overheating. You may hear it referred to as an unregulated mod.

MODs/: Regulated
Regulated mods contain a smart chip, a micro computer that signals the battery sending power to the atomizer. Some smart chips let the user choose various voltage and/or wattage settings which affects vapor production, also called vapor volume, and vapor temperature which affects taste. For instance, lowering the ohms (the electrical resistance) and increasing voltage provides more vapor, an improved throat hit, and can provide additional flavor. Combined with your choice of e-juice this can significantly alter your vaping experience. The smart chip lets the user customize other items, too, such as using sub-ohm vaping or accommodating multiple battery sizes.

You can buy a ready-to-use vape pen mod or if you’re technically inclined, you can build your own vaping system. Your choice of smart chip determines your battery life, cloud production, taste and flavor enhancements, and ultimately, your throat hit. Your options vary widely depending on the chip you choose. For instance, the Evolv DNA 40 chip features wattage control up to 40W, temperature protection, a preheating setting for the box, watts adjustment and an OLED screen that lets you view settings. Like the CPU in your computer, the smart chip in your vaping system is the “brains” of it. At best if it gets damaged, you lose important functionality, at worst you have a “bricked” device or like the Cheech and Chong comedy routine goes, it can go “up in smoke.” Literally, a smart chip malfunction can mean no temperature or wattage control. The device can overheat, catch fire or explode.


You can enhance your vaping experience using an unregulated or regulated mod. A regulated mod gives you more choice and control over your vaping experience, plus safety features. However, if the smart chip in your mod gets damaged, you’ll need to replace it since it controls device functionality.

Not All Vaping Batteries Are Created Equally

We’re going to discuss how and why not all vaping batteries are the same. You see, vaping batteries are just like everything else in the world – being created unequally, and some aren’t what they seem to be. The batteries are different from the following categories: Protected versus Unprotected.

Protected – Protected vaping batteries have a small circuit board located mostly at the bottom of the battery. The circuit board is designed to stop discharging or charging of the battery in certain circumstances such as during overcharging, short circuit, over-discharge and overheating in some cases. The unique thing about these batteries are the fact that they require special chargers that’re designed specifically to charge rechargeable lithium batteries.

Unprotected – Unprotected lithium batteries, on the other hand, produce 4.2 volts of power if fully charged which falls quickly to 3.6 volts on output. The batteries can maintain 3.6 voltage output until they are mostly discharged where the voltage drops rapidly. Whenever these kind of batteries are discharged below 3 volts, they become ruined and unusable. It’s therefore recommended to the vaper to avoid such situations. Another unique thing about this batteries is that they should be charged only with chargers that’re designed specifically for them, since they’ve circuits suited to stop charging when 4.2 volts is reached.

Recommendation – With this kind of information, it’s therefore clear to see why protected batteries are better and should be given priority. But if the unprotected battery is being used, then it’s appropriate to make sure that the charger is designed to handle the batteries. The mistake of charging the battery in the wrong charge could melt the wiring, causing damage to your vaping device.

Breaking Down the Battery Name – The batteries have different names such as IMR, 18650, ICR, 14500 and 18350. These letters and numbers have a meaning, and they can be broken down as follows:

  • I- Stands for a Lithium Ion Battery Li-Ion
  • M- Stands for Manganese which is a positive ion for battery
  • C- Stands for Cobalt a positive ion in the battery
  • N- stands for Nickle, a positive ion in the battery
  • F- stands for iron, a positive ion in the battery
  • R- Stands for rechargeable
  • 18- Implies that the battery diameter is 18mm
  • 650- Stands for height in tenths of millimeters 65
  • 850- Stands for tenths of millimeters 85

High Drain versus Regular – The other way in which vaping batteries differ is in the way they drain their power. For example, IMR battery usually handles 8.0C drain, implying that the battery can output 8x the capacity indicated on the label. An IMR 18650 battery with 2000mAh can drain at a rate of 8*2000=16amp. These kind of batteries have more Manganese chemistry, which’s less volatile than Cobalt chemistry.

Another example is an ICR cell which handles 2.0C drain. So an ICR 18650 battery with 2400mAh can output 2*2000=4.8amp. Most of these batteries have cobalt material that’s more volatile, and therefore has a protection board.

With these kinds of differences, it’s evident that vaping batteries are very different, and it’s appropriate to understand how each works and what they mean.

Finding The Right Throat Hit

To find just the right throat hit from your vaping device, be it an e-cigarette or MOD for instances, there are a few factors to consider that wouldn’t ordinarily cross the mind of those that’re brand new to vaping and the products that’re available.

  • E-Liquid flavor
  • PG/VG Ratio
  • Type of Device and Strength of Atomizer/Battery

E-liquid Flavor 
Keep in mind that this is a critical decision when selecting an e-liquid flavor that is tolerable to your palette and nose. 
When mixing custom e-liquids in lieu of choosing favored pre-fabricated blends, keep in mind these “ideal flavors” will taste when inhaled as they would if they were left to burn on a barbecue, so flavors like Cherry and Peach, which sounds delightful, will taste like burnt Cherries and Peaches (very gross!), so think more on the camp of blending tobacco and fruits or desserts, or menthol blended with fruit or desserts for the most tolerable tastes.

This has a simplistic yet gradual equation
Nevermind what they stand for but the higher the PG percentage next to the VG percentage (ie. 70%/30%) the stronger the throat hit will be, the closer to 50%/50% the higher the vapor output will be and the lesser the throat hit will be. So for stronger throat hit on any e-liquid blend, choose the higher PG value.
Type of Device and the output strength in wattage of the battery and atomizers inserted
Vaporizers are a finicky creature 
Most vapes are gonna give you a lot of throat hit which is not dependent on the e-liquid, PG value, or battery/atomizer output, basically the size of the vaporizer at the base is bigger for a higher wattage output and this higher wattage output charges and heats the cotton coil atomizer inserted at the neck of the device to heat up the e-liquid and create vapor, the faster it heats the more vapor that will pour out from the device at once, creating a larger vapor cloud upon exhale.

We should now be able to discern that if you prefer a strong throat hit over more vapor clouds, go with a smaller device, include tobacco and/or menthol flavors in your e-liquid, and ask your vape tender to give you the highest PG value possible, or more so pretty much to your own personal taste, have fun vaping, it’s definitely a worthwhile experience!

What Strength of E-Liquid Should I Purchase?

The best of them have close to 1500 mAh and provide over a 1000 puffs before needing to be recharged. So you can go small and still get a couple of days use out of a smaller vaping device, with the same coil dynamics. You’ll get a device that can be concealed, is lighter, and requires moderately less upkeep than a larger device.


Keep in mind that it would take the higher end of a smaller brand to beat the mid-tier of a larger sized brand. The give and take continues, and leads you down through the rabbit hole. You can spend days figuring out the variables that favor one size vaping device over another. By using the keeping it simple route you’ll see that it all comes down to performance. A combination of battery life, comfort levels, available puffs per charge, ability to mod and accessories will determine the best choice. Size is irrelevant if the end product is not up to standards with what you want.


By finding that happy medium, you’re shedding the silly question of whether you should be concerned with the size of a vaping device. Some users prefer a single coil, while heavy users prefer a double coil. It’s a matter of preference, and not all vapers are created the same.


The all-important clue that’s left out of the equation is getting quality e-liquid. Don’t get the best vaping device only to fill it with second hand fuel. Treat it like a new car, and put only the good stuff in there. The process can be as simple or complicated, but won’t really matter if you aren’t enjoying your vaping experience.
